Pursuer Softening and Withdrawer Reengagement: Working with Asian Clients in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

This seminar explores pursuer softening and withdrawer reengagement work with Asian clients through the lens of two clinical cases. One case involves a heterosexual Asian couple, and the second involves a heterosexual intercultural couple consisting of a Caucasian woman and an Asian man. Using these cases, participants will examine how core EFT interventions unfold when attuned to the cultural contexts of Asian clients.
The seminar will address the unique challenges therapists often encounter when working with Asian clients, particularly around emotional expression, vulnerability, attachment needs, and relational expectations shaped by culture, family systems, and intergenerational experiences. Emphasis will be placed on how therapists can bring the EFT process alive by deepening emotional experience, offering validation that is culturally responsive, tracking the negative cycle, slowing interactions, and meeting emotions in ways that feel safe, respectful, and resonant for clients. Even for therapists who do not regularly work with Asian clients, this seminar offers broadly applicable insights for working with individuals and couples who are more emotionally reserved, come from shame-based or collectivist cultures, or have learned to protect vulnerability in the context of family, cultural, or relational expectations.

Presenter: Diana Jhin, LMFT
Diana is a licensed marriage and family therapist and Certified Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Therapist and Supervisor. She works at a private practice in Greenwich, Connecticut, where she works primarily with couples and individuals, with a clinical focus on trauma, abuse, and intercultural relationships.
Shaped by her experiences growing up as an Asian American in a predominantly Caucasian community in New York and later living abroad in Asia as an American, Diana brings a deep appreciation for the complexities of culture, identity, and belonging. She is passionate about helping all clients find and strengthen their voice, while thoughtfully attending to the ways cultural and relational experiences shape how individuals understand themselves and connect with others..
