Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Working with Couples Impacted by Multiple Trauma due to Race, Gender and Neurodiversity.
Presenter: Colette Brown, LCSW
In this seminar, Colette will speak on how to work with a couple with a history of neurodiversity, racial trauma, and severe mental. She will present the case of a Haitian-American couple who are trying to work through the combined difficulty of Schizoaffective Disorder (Depressive type), Autism and trauma due to racism impact upon self-esteem. This video and presentation will explore the one of the client’s negative View of Self – the internal working model that fuels her participation in both the couple’s cycle of interaction and undermines her desire to heal from her own attachment wounds.

Presenter:
Colette Ingrid Brown LCSW (she/her) is an African-American cisgender female psychotherapist. Before becoming a LCSW, Colette was a teacher in the New York City public high schools. She has extensive experience working with BIPOC, biracial, multinational, and neurodiverse clients. She is in private practice in NYC and works with individuals, couples and families. Colette also consults with businesses and corporations in their efforts to promote and augment employee mental wellness and belonging.
Colette is working towards certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy and trained at the Ackerman Relational Approach. She believes that our personal, cultural, and societal narratives shape who we are and how we communicate. Finally, in her free time, Colette is an avid gamer – video, tabletop boardgames, and RPGs. She uses her love of “Geek Culture” in the therapy room as both a mindset and a model which values curiosity, playfulness, and flexibility.
