I Will Never Forget Your Pain: A Case Example of the Attachment Injury Repair Model in Stage 1 and Stage 2

Presenter: Julia Belotserkovsky, PhD

Discussant: Irina Wen, PhD

2 CEU’s through TRIEFT

In this seminar, we will follow a heterosexual couple over a year in treatment after presenting in a profound post-infidelity attachment injury state. Both partners are survivors of significant childhood attachment trauma. We will track the couple from the highly escalated, desperate, near-divorce, hopeless state to the state of deep repair, a renewed more profound sense of trust, care and connection. We will discuss the challenges therapists face in the initial stage of containing the escalation while tracking the negative cycle of anger, protest, blame, defensiveness and shame. We will also focus on the process of helping the injuring partner not only feel the pain they caused, but also reach for their partner’s comfort and reassurance.
