As EFT therapists we use specific interventions designed to draw out our client’s emotions to help them to accept, communicate and, eventually, restructure their negative cycle into a more positive attunement. As these feelings and needs become more visible in the room, the therapist encourages the partners to express them to each other from a stance of vulnerability. Yet, at times, the clients’ anger may surface in the sessions, causing them to attack each other. During these times, the therapist needs to reframe the clients’ responses from an attachment perspective without using euphemisms or highlighting the positive aspects of the situation.
This is when things get very hard for us as therapists. Sometimes our clients make statements that compromise our ability to stay present, centered, emotionally available and empathetic. Sometimes We become triggered in session and, if we therapists cannot self-soothe, we risk dropping our client and destabilizing our attunement to them.
This workshop will explore common ways therapists become triggered in sessions and introduce a self-regulation model based on Harry Aponte’s The Person of the Therapist: Mastering the Use of Self.
