Tango and EFT share a lot in common! Both are about connection, attunement, and masterful improvisation. The founder of the EFT model, Dr. Sue Johnson was a passionate student of Tango. Many EFT practitioners around the world share her passion. We have designed this special event for you to experience the beauty of Tango and to come together to connect, exchange, and enjoy.
This is a fundraising event created in alignment with NYCEFT’s commitment to upholding values of inclusivity, diversity, and equity in all aspects of our services. Funds raised during this event will support scholarships for therapists from historically marginalized communities.

Mary Etienne Carmel

Mary is an educator and higher education advising administrator, currently serving as the assistant dean in the School of Arts and Sciences at La Salle University. Spanning a 17-year career, she has served in various leadership roles in advising and program operations, including at Temple University, Trinity Washington University, and Hofstra University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and economics from the University of Connecticut and a Master’s in geography and urban studies from Temple University. In addition to presenting and writing about advising, she has also presented on facilitating dialogue to advance equity and inclusion and has co-authored articles on faculty development.
Mary is a tango dancer, DJ, organizer, and teacher in Philadelphia, PA. As an active and experienced member of the tango community, she endeavors to create and contribute to dance spaces that value learning, inclusion, and connection.
Ciko Cigdem

Ciko grew up in Turkey and studied architecture before falling in love with tango. Her motivation to pursue tango has been the connection to another soul and body, as well as her own, through a music that inspires her. During her visits to Buenos Aires, she focused solely in the dance in its original grounds exploring and studying both traditional and nuevo tango roots which developed the Argentine quality in her dance. Her dance is defined by its sensuality, creative playfulness, musicality and elasticity. She has also studied other movement modalities such as contact improvisation, yoga, aerial yoga, Feldenkrais over the years. Ciko has worked across US and Canada teaching workshops and at festivals and creates a beautiful tango community in NYC.
Carlos Andres Duenas

Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, Carlos studied Finance, Government and International Relations and received his B.A from Universidad Externado de Colombia in 2001. He moved to NYC in 2003 and discovered and fell in love with tango in 2010 when strolling through Central Park. For the next 14 years Carlos became an Argentine Tango nerd and an event organizer traveling endlessly to Buenos Aires to study and absorb the essence and culture of this beautiful dance. More recently he has been hosting a popular tango practice event named after a rescued dog every Thursday in Manhattan and a monthly Saturday afternoon tango social. Carlos is especially drawn to the elegance and smoothness of Tango Salon and has been teaching private and group classes in NYC.
Phi Lee Lam

Phi is a queer Tango dancer and organizer who facilitates experiences at the intersection of artistic, somatic, and contemplative practice. She is an immigrant from Singapore who has lived and worked in several continents including Argentina where she first encountered tango danced by two women switching roles. In 2014, co-founded the Queer Tango Club, later the Queer Tango Collective, Inc. where she provided safe spaces for women and LGBTQIA+ dancers; raised awareness of queer tango dancers by organizing public performances; and increased visibility of same-gender partner dancing on the social dance floor in New York City. In recent years she has been invited to teach and perform at Queer Tango Festivals and mainstream Tango events in Montreal, Boston, D.C. and Philadelphia. Today, she organizes events under La Nuestra Tango, a non-profit organization, and is invigorated by the possibilities of a Tango culture and dance that is driven by those on the periphery of mainstream tango. www.lanuestratango.com
Leonardo Sardella

Leonardo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He began studying Tango and other dance at the Conservatorio Nacional de Danza at the age of eight. Leo studied with many Tango maestros including. Leo has been a leading or featured dancer in Tango shows presented in prestigious theaters in Buenos Aires and around the world. In recent years, he has toured, taught and performed in the United States and Europe with Johana Copes, including Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Minneapolis, Vienna, St. Petersburg and Rome.
Walter Perez

Walter was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was introduced to the Argentine Tango in 1993, and trained with many renowned Argentine Tango masters. He has appeared as a featured dancer in many Tango productions in Buenos Aires, New York and around the world, on stage and on television. In 2011 Walter formed the Malevaje Dance Company with Leonardo Sardella. As Malevaje, they have performed and taught in the United States, England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Iceland, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Bolivia, and Argentina; participated in several International Queer Tango Festivals.
Leo and Walter are highly regarded teachers and performers, known for their seamless exchanges of lead and follow, creativity and musicality. They are also the founders of “Friends of Argentine Tango,” a non-profit organization, that was created in 2013 to promote and bring the positive benefits of dancing Tango and other Latin Social Dances to people who might otherwise never try it. They are introducing dancing to seniors, children, people coping with chronic conditions (Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s) and disabilities. www.friendsofargentinetango.org
