Risk in being witnessed: choreographing emotionally vulnerable dialogues in a psychoeducational group for diverse couples

Presented by Traci Maynigo, Psy.D. and Lisbeth parra , M.S., MHC-LP

You have an opportunity to purchase and view the recording of our workshop for $20 to support NYCEFT's anti-racism initiatives

Those of us who attended the workshop were very moved by the community healing that happens when group members provide feedback to the couples having vulnerable conversations. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn and witness. We hope that we can all learn and bring it into our work with many clients.

Through video presentations of group leaders in action, participants learned how to: orchestrate EFT enactments to allow partners to safely access, express, and respond to vulnerable emotion; discern cultural variations in attachment and emotion to ensure cross-cultural application; and utilize here-and-now processing to facilitate a self-reflective feedback loop between the couple and group, ushering emotional change among all group members.

This seminar included a particular focus on the experiences of our Latinx Spanish-speaking couples, and a discussion of cultural differences in emotional experience, expression, and engagement among them. Presenters demonstrated how to nurture emotional safety between partners by utilizing culturally competent skills that are especially effective in heralding emotional change among Latinx clients.
