The New York Center for EFT is Proud to Support

    Congress Attachment and Trauma

    The neurobiology of healing

Over the last decades, the studies on the brain and on psychotherapy have underlined that what happens within the therapist-patient dyad has an impact on the microarchitecture of the brain. Furthermore, with the passing of time, the relationship between the development of several areas of the brain during the process of growth and the experiences that each individual makes later on, has been increasingly explored. Consequently, not only researchers have succeeded in understanding the links between the different areas of the human brain, but they have also become aware of the influence that the functioning of some specific areas of the brain has on the mental health (or the psychopathology) of each human being. Besides this, these studies have shown the effects of every individual's relationships on the development and the functioning of his/her brain all over the course of life.

Modern psychotherapy, based on both neurophysiology and neurobiology, has been increasingly oriented towards the creation of a therapeutic relationship where the therapist has a mindful attitude to his/her own patient, while the latter can make new experiences, which are able to change his/her neural patterns of functioning and to make them healthier.

Some of the most eminent experts in the fields of Cognitive Neurophysiology, Neurobiology and Psychotherapy, will meet in New York to attend the Congress "Attachment and Trauma: The Neurobiology of Healing" - organized, for the very first time, in the "Big Apple", near the vibrant Times Square - to share and integrate their vast knowledge on this subject. After a 60-minute intervention, each speaker will focus on a 30-minute question-and-answer session with the audience. Finally, at the end of each day, all the speakers that have made a presentation will gather in a 180-minute panel discussion, to further analyze different specific topics.

The focus of this two-day training in the application of EFT with trauma survivor couples, if to work to help the trauma survivor reach open-heartedly and the partner respond vulnerably. This training emphasizes three key features in working with emotional echoes: clinical assessment and identification of various personal and relationship factors that impact clinical decision-making, key EFT interventions central to working with emotion both intrapsychically and interpersonally, and the how of pacing intrapsychic and interpersonal work.

In this training, the importance of the clinician’s ability to monitor and respond to client’s moment-to- moment experiences, especially extreme states of numbing, will be highlighted. Participants will come away with the knowledge of how to work intrapsychically piece-by-piece with partners in order to work interpersonally to create healing between them. Participants will learn how to support the trauma survivor in cultivating courage to reach for comfort and protection (tension between fears and longings) and how to prepare partners to be responsive (an amazing privilege but also an extraordinary pressure for the partner of a trauma survivor). Participants learn how to stay in the process when clients become activated emotionally, a common outcome of trauma, and when, we, the clinicians, get triggered.

Through teaching, video presentation, and experiential learning, you’ll see how to use voice, reflection, and deepening interventions to help partners make contact, stay in contact in order to distill, and then share vulnerabilities with each other in order to break the familiar yet dreaded feeling of emotional isolation, a common result of enduring trauma.

    KATHRYN RHEEM ED.D., LMFT

Dr. Kathryn Rheem, Director of the Washington Baltimore Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy (WBCEFT) for the last seven years, has trained hundreds of mental health clinicians in EFT nationally and internationally. She has been a student of EFT since 2002, has been using this empirically-validated approach exclusively in private practice since 2005, and continues to study and learn the model daily. Along with her mentor Dr. Sue Johnson, originator of EFT, Kathryn’s best teachers of this humanistic, attachment-based model are the couples she works with weekly in private practice. Together, Sue & Kathryn created Strong Bonds, Strong Couples, LLC, which provided EFT-based weekend retreats for Soldiers & Marines coming home from the wars Iraq and Afghanistan and their partners at military installations in the U.S. and abroad. Kathryn has trained U.S. Army Chaplains & European Regional Medical Command in EFT and consults monthly with the U.S. Veterans Administration. She works extensively with couples where one or both partners have endured trauma and has written and presented on the application of EFT with trauma numerous times. Kathryn was voted a Top Couples Therapist in Washington, D.C. by the Washingtonian magazine in December 2012. A clinical fellow and approved Supervisor of AAMFT, she has written nine articles/chapters on the application of EFT.

In addition to teaching and training in these areas, and working with hundreds of couples and families over the years, she also specializes in providing psychological assessments, as well as psychotherapy and crisis intervention services to client populations including active military and veterans and their families, first responders, injured workers, and individuals who have suffered various types of developmental trauma.

"The Core skills training has deepened my understanding of all of the steps in EFT and helped me feel a more solid foundation. The steps are explained clearly and the role plays are very effective in getting us to experience what our clients feel, and practice being there for them. I also liked the way the two day sessions were spaced out by several weeks. That gave us time to integrate the information and try on using it."  Carolyn McIntyre, LCSW

HEALING BROKEN BONDS AND BETRAYALS: EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY AND THE TREATMENT OF INFIDELITY

Infidelity is a frequent presenting concern in couple therapy.  Although a common reason given for divorce, many couples seek treatment to heal their relationship rather than seek its end as a result of an affair.  This symposium will review couple therapy practices used in treating affairs and explore the treatment of infidelity using Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy.

Infidelity may result in a breach of trust leading to devastating consequences for couples. EFT conceptualizes infidelity as a type of "attachment injury" where a fundamental breach of trust inhibits partner's ability to resolve an affair and potential long standing patterns of distance and distress.  EFT provides a multi-step approach to resolving attachment injuries that has demonstrated empirical support resolving attachment injuries and moving couples toward healing.

This workshop provides practical direction in treating infidelity as an attachment injury. The presentation includes original research examining the relationship of attachment security and recovery from infidelity along with video and case demonstrations by the presenters illustrating key moments in the process of resolving injuries as a result of affairs.
